Function review in kutcheribuzz.com:

Sivalayam, a Chennai based  organisation working for the  promotion of Carnatic music and dance, has brought out an album in CD form, of a live concert of Seerkazhi R. Jeyaraman.

The man behind the project is
Mrindangist J. Skanda Prasad,  son of Jeyaraman, who dabbles  with his computer and who is into mastering music albums. The album is a 72 minute edited version of a 2 1/2 hour live  concert organised by the Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer Golden Jubilee Trust at the Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore.

The editing, mastering and even the packaging and design  was done by Skanda Prasad singlehandedly!

Jayaraman is otherwise well known for his devoted running  of Thyagaraja Sangeetha Vidwath Samajam in Mylapore, Chennai, and the temple of Saint Thyagaraja at  Thyagarajapuram in Mylapore. Priced at Rs. 250, the album  has Jayaraman proving his skills and interest in music to  add to his service to its cause all these years.

The main piece is in Kalyani - Raamani Vaadu Konduvo in Adi thisra nadai - and the album  includes a song on Nanganallur  Anjaneya by Jeyaraman. The singer is accompanied  by Usha Rajagopalan and J. Vaidhyanathan on the violin  and mridangam respectively.   A small release function in Madras saw an impressive list of music and sabha names attending to wish Jayaraman well.

SIVALAYAM RELEASES CD OF SEERKAZHI R. JAYARAMAN

Violin duet of Usha and Meera precede CD release

The evening of 3rd May saw ancient classical music make another foray into scientific advancement with the CD release of Seerkazhi R. Jayaraman. The CD release was organised by Sivalayam, and its organizer Sri Seerkazhi Skanda Prasad, the young mridangist, who has himself single handedly designed and brought out his father’s live concert as CD. Well, carnatic music may be ancient but not the carnatic musicians!

After the violin concert of Usha Rajagopalan and Meera Sivaramakrishnan, accompanied by Karaikudi J. Jayaraman and Pudukottai N. Ramachandran, the program surprisingly began on time with the prayer song rendered by Smt. Radha Subramanian.

Sri Appadurai of STB Music Circle Trust welcomed the gathering with brief introductions about the dignitaries present - Sri B.R.Kumar (Station Director, AIR), who released the CD, Sri. N.V.Subramaniam (Saraswathy Vaggeyakara Trust), who received it Sri. R.Krishnaswamy (President, Federation of City Sabhas) and Sri S.V.Krishnan (Naada Inbam), who offered their felicitations.

He made special mention of Sri S.V. Krishnan’s practice of receiving the artists personally at the Railway station when they came to Coimbatore for performing at Raga Sudha, and Sri. R.Krishnaswamy’s administrative qualities.

The CD was played in the background as it was released. The accompanists in the CD were Sri. J.Vaidyanadhan and Usha Rajagopalan.

Sri. B.R.Kumar delivered the presidential address in chaste Tamil, calling the CD release “Nunn Alai Isai Thattu Veliyeetu Vizha”! He spoke of further advances in science on the cards that will enable music transmission through space in the near future.

An oft- repeated sentence in such functions is “After the speech of so and so, nobody else can speak!” Sri. N.V.Subramaniam fell for it and began his speech with this stale remark. He also had a slick attack on those who vary the traditional rendition of Tyagaraja Swamy’s kritis with the words, “Do you know how Tyagaraja sang?” and wished the Saint composer had a tape recorder in his times!

Sri. R.Krishnaswamy quoted Bharat Ratna Abdul Kalam’s autobiography, where he places spirituality above science and fully agreed with the scientist. He commended whole-heartedly Skanda Prasad’s efforts in bringing out this CD. He also recalled Seerkazhi Jayaraman’s guru bhakthi and his singing beautifully on the “maada veethis” during the early hours of month “Margazhi”.

He expressed his happiness over the way youngsters in carnatic music world having a scientific temperament too and made special mention of Poorna Shiva making waves in Satyam Infoway and Skanda Prasad in bringing out this CD.

Sri S.V. Krishnan appreciated Seerkazhi Jayaraman’s qualities as a good person and said that carnatic music flourishes not only due to star performers but also due to persons like Jayaraman who safeguard music from obliteration and called this category of men “care takers”. “Though Jayaraman may not have found new kritis”, he said and added, “he doesn’t spoil the existing ones!”

A very emotional Jayaraman gave the acceptance speech recalling in a choked voice the influence of his Guru Sri Sattur Anna, Haridas Swamigal and his own brother.
